I work in a small 16-bed high-care senior care home. While on night shifts, I make scrapbooks for residents to read, look through, play eye spy, and reminisce. They have been very popular!
I make them out of old magazines such as Woman's Weekly, Better Homes and Gardens, Good Health, etc. Any magazines can be used.
So far I have made food, garden, people, 4WD, animals, and mixed scrapbooks.
I have spent some time sorting through their care plans, and I am making each resident a scrapbook based on their interests.

I have also done this using old calendar pages by asking all to save them for me at the end of the year. You must used the photos in them back to back. You can quickly create a great themed "book" by sliding the pages in to a page protector back to back and slipping the page into a binder. Since the calendars are already themed it is a simple job to make a beautiful book.
I love this idea!
Thanks for your feedback Shelby!
Such a awesome activity, we are giving it a go next week plus it also goes with a recycling program we have so thank you
Thanks so much for your feedback Gail!
Hi Hiemstra
What a great idea
Thank you for sharing it
Every Season we make placemats with magazines, calendars, etc. Anything with pictures we can cut out! They go through pictures and cut out what they like and we glue it to a paper placemat! Once it's covered we mod podge it twice, allowing to dry between layers. I remember doing this when I was little in school and believe it or not, it's a hit with our seniors!
Thanks Kellie, its awosome.
Awesome idea I can't wait to put some scrapbooks together with old magazines.
I got a lot of old calenders donated, I am in the process of laminating and I am putting a variety of suggested questions for reminiscing sessions which they love.
I then put up to 10 pics in each folder for group sessions or one one ones.
Thankyou Golden Carers for inspiration.
Wow Cheryl Lee this is a great idea
Maybe you can take a picture to share with us
Thank you for all your hard work
Our residents love scrapbooking and has made books on royalty, cars, holidays, children etc. These become a great conversation piece for my volunteers to use on one on one visits with our bedridden residents, with those in isolation etc.
Thanks so much for your feedback Adriana, scrapbooking is a great activity!
I love it, always looking for more self directed ideas. I know half priced books sells tons of cheap magazines too.
Thanks for your feedback Kimberly! That's a great tip too.
This is brilliant. Every year for Christmas I get my mom a cat calendar. Now I know just what to do with them. Plus I love to scrapbook. This is great way me and my mom can do an activity together.
Haha love it! A scrapbook all about cats would be lovely and very entertaining to look at!
Old calenders are brilliant for this. We've used these for quite a few years, laminate so they last longer. As said before many topics. I've done one on residents weddings and it's well loved!
Thank you for the idea i am definintely doing the old actors 1 & a royals 1tostart with to see how they go with my residents
Our daily newspaper has a pet of the day photo in it with a amusing storyline added to it. I cut it out and when we have a pile the residents help paste them into a scrapbook. They enjoy looking through the scrapbook they have made.
Great idea!
Hi I will be definitely doing this with my client. She just loves her cat mindy. Many thanks for the idea. trish
I got a volunteer to make some memory books buy taking pictures out of old books bought from op shops and markets, calendar pictures, photo's and laminating them and putting into folders. We made memory books suitable for men, one on fishing, cars, and motorbikes. The most popular are the animal memory books mostly made from old calender pictures, so doesn't have to be expensive. A great tool to use when residents are unsettled and for doing 1:1 with.

Thanks Kelly-Anne - re Recycled Magazine Scrapbooks. I have made folders with plastic sleeves of pictures i've used from out of date calendars bought from the dollar shops. They are amazing. I have folders of Dogs & puppies, Cats & kittens, Blooms, Australian Flora, Aust Fauna, Aust Landscapes, Aust Icons, Spiritual verses, Dolls, Vintage cars, Birds, Teddies, Aboriginal art, Friendships, Christmas and many more. I leave them scattered around the activities area and it's very rewarding to see residents just paging through the folders sharing their pictures and talking about it with each other. The folders also come in handy for reminiscence sessions, as you can see from the titles. Look out now for the bargains on the 2014 calendars! MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!!!!!!
I use calendars, I leave posters on pin up boards around December requesting everyones old calendars. I laminate them and use them for place mats, I put them up on the pin up board in the residents lounge which I change every time I go in, it gives them something new to look at, I make the books as suggested, and I also use them for reminiscence.
Great idea..I have used calendars from the Reject shop and they have beautiful pictures in them too and for want of floral pictures Better Homes and Gardens magazines have great ones.
Great idea , will definitely be giving it a go.
Thanks
What an absolute great idea will definitely try it myself
Interesting way to engage Elders in an actvity that can promote reminiscence and also reveal more about their likes a dislikes.
What an excellent idea Kellie.. How rewarding that would be .. i am going to try this one myself.. Thankyou for the idea :-)
Brilliant idea, I have lots of donated magazines in the home so will go and buy some scrapbooks tomorrow and get started on Thursday.
what a great idea - you are the first night shift worker that actually does something for the residents (instead cleaning and documentation) etc. Love it and might try that myself :)
yes i have done this also, travel australia, travel overseas, stories of interest to older people, scapbooks on animals and children, and guess who this is famous people in australia and overseas..old and new movie stars folders
I have just made one the these scrapbooks after seeing this idea the other day. I got my residents to find any pictures to do with the Royals then we glued them into the book they have loved it.
now working on the Olympics so when ever I see an article I grab it. great idea not too stressing for high care residents and they can keep at it when they feel like it.
