Hi, I was wondering if anyone here had any tips or tricks for running a book club in memory care? We have what I call a literary club where I read a different short story every week but it's just not the same and it can be hard to find short stories that will fill the time slot and are on level but not childish. Do you find residents struggle following the storyline from week to week, does a recap of the last chapter help? My residents also like having a copy of what I'm reading to follow along how do you get copies without buying enough books for 20 people?
Hi Scott
I like the name Literary Club
I like the idea of reading short stories to the group
My favorite stories are chicken soup for the soul stories
There are so many of them, and you can make them interactive getting everyone involved. You can give me do some reminiscing.
B sides reading and discussing them
You can make up your own stories are you could do mad Libs
You could make up your own endings two-story you could decide from two and pick my favorite
You could put the stories in a folder for each member to help
You can get many of these books at the library and you could probably find some of these stories online
Let me know if you want to do any of these nights could give you more specifics
Hi again, SCOTT

Hi,
I host a book club event every Saturday 10-1130 am
10am: Pass out copies of the story to each resident
Introduce the story ("The Uninvited Guest". I might ask the question, what do think this story might be about? throw out some quick scenarios etc. now they are curious to find out)
Let's get started (sometimes resident want to read out loud and sometimes not) I read the story out loud to the end.
1030: am Hydration & snack severed (residents usually begin re- reading to themselves while I prepare & serve the snack,) slice fruit, applesauce etc. for pureed.
11am: I start the review / discuss: (make fun) we talk, laugh, residents share stories
1130: they head off for lunch taking their books with them
Hi Fran
Thank you for sharing this, it sounds like you have a great group
