Does anyone have any clues as what to do about a resident who as the day goes on (generally) becomes aggressive toward certain other residents AND another residents who cries generally in the evening..is conconsolable. When asked..why are you crying.. she says she isn't.. help we need insight strategies
I suggest first looking at physical needs- are their physical needs being adequately met?are they in pain?( they may not be able to tell you if they are in pain so the Abbey pain scale could help you find out) Is their physical condition causing the behaviour eg pressure on parts of the brain? Look for other clues to their behaviour- things that might trigger it- look at life history of the person, talk to their families. See what can be done to avoid triggers and what you can do to distract them to avoid behaviours eg 1)pet therapy- we are using a furreal toy dog and cat with success-they can be bought on ebay,2) baby doll-could help the resident that cries 3) activities they can engage in. DBMAS Dementia Behaviour management advisory service could help you. Their phone number is 1800699799. Hope this helps you. Blessings, Carolyn
Help with suggestions pls. 40 person unit. 3 men are wanderers. 2 get into everything and everywhere. One can be violent & turn in an instant, the other has the potential to be so. I know it's their dementia and they can't help it. The DT starts at 6am and is gone by 3pm. We have a social nurse until around 5pm. However these behaviours generally start after dinner, when these staff are gone. Nurses are unable to focus on their other tasks with one nurse having to entertain/take care of these 2 in particular..Staff are tired, very tired.
For the person who likes to throw things find some softballs like Nerf balls And put them in soft containers like paper bags in various locations throughout the area he travels
For the lady who screams and cries a lot have you tried headphones with pleasant music which she can listen to For the people Will get into everything and anything I have boxes or paper bags filled with junk and after they take all the stuff out put the bags in front of them and ask them to pick them up How about tying and untying not have one tie and the other one untie
Do you have any volunteers or family members that can sit with the problem residents?? These may or may not work Let us know how it goes
I love Golden Carers, it's a fantastic resource! I not only find great activities for my seniors to do but have also inspired me to make my own activities to share as well. Thanks so much & keep up the wonderful job!
I wish there were an easy answer but the ideas of Carolyn suggested are worth trying
If you cannot come up with any thing that seems to set these people off then the next step is trial and error to see what might help
