I replaced salt for the sand and used food coloring.
Use a new container of salt and pour it into a zip lock bag.
Add as many drops of food coloring as need to obtain the color of choice, approximately 15 to 20 drops. Close zip lock while mixing color.
Use a new container of salt for each color.
It will last a long time. A lot cheaper than buying colored sand.
