Doll Therapy and Dementia

During a singing session I often pass the lifelike baby doll around the group, the residents singing to the "baby". It creates a positive atmosphere and feelings of contentment. What can be more natural than the desire to hold and cuddle a baby, which brings back so many memories for residents. No point analyzing the "therapy", just enjoy the moment.

Music and singing works very well to connect with a non-verbal resident. Hold their hands and sing an old song to them, such as "You are my Sunshine". You may find the resident smiling, joining in with a word or two of the chorus, or shaking hands in time with music. Good luck.

Try giving everyone a baby doll to nurse during singing sessions, it has a soothing effect.

We separate the tables into Café style, 4-6 seats per table, tablecloth and centre candle (battery-operated). A few card games on each table for residents. Finger food, background music, lucky door prizes. We also do themed happy hours, eg. middle-eastern theme with belly-dancers display.
