Quality improvement ideas are always welcoming. I do cook club 1x monthly. I try to select quick easy recipes to promote sensory and reminiscence interests. The residents eat the end product, and I am mindful of dietary requirements. I have a 1-hour time frame which limits the experience, however, being organised overcomes this problem. I am always looking for quality improvement ideas.
I celebrate spring with morning tea, music and ask the residents to dress in their brightest coloured outfits. Mr or Mrs Spring is selected. I had a royal chair made and the winner is seated upon the chair. A crown of flowers is placed on the winners head then the winner is presented with a bouquet of flowers. It is a fun morning.
Very much appreciated for the activities, and cross words I have been giving copies to our residents to do during lock down they are really enjoying them
I work with a small group of people who have dementia and it is sometimes difficult to get them involved as a group, for different reasons, however, I have found singalong brings them together and engages each of them for half and hour to an hour. I don't usually have music so we sing songs which we all know/remember, relate to. Residents are relaxed and not agitated during this time which is usually approximately 3pm. A couple of residents are looking to go home or catching a bus about this time. Singalong distracts them.
I recently organized a rock and roll themed morning - Elvis Presley. I displayed a stage with rock and roll skirts, tops and shirts, Elvis Presley T shirts, costumes and memorabilia. I invited a singer to entertain the residents with rock and roll / Elvis Presley songs/music. The morning was fun clients had a great time.
I have found poetry triggers memories for some of our residents who have dementia and I am often surprised by how often some can continue to recite the whole poem without very much prompting, especially the older poems which some had learnt at school.
I love this website. I can refer back to it in a pinch when looking for a quick project or activity for the community members I work with. There are plenty of tips, as well as instructions for the activities which are so helpful.
