Bring the thrill of the track to life with a fun and lighthearted sandbag horse race. This activity combines friendly competition, laughter, and a dash of theatrical flair for a memorable racing-themed celebration!

  • Shape 6-8 sandbags to resemble horses. Attach comical, oversized horse head images to each bag and give each horse a humorous names such as “Party Animal,” “Gallop Gossip,” or “Neigh-Sayer.”
  • Secure each sandbag horse with a length of string (about 8-10 meters) for reeling.
  • Set up a start line and finish line, spaced about 8-10 meters apart.
  • Designate “jockeys” for each race, inviting residents and staff to participate.
  • Rotate jockeys each round to ensure everyone has a chance to join in the fun.

Additional Elements for Fun:

  • Designate a “race commentator” with a sense of humor to narrate the action.
  • Write playful profiles for each horse, such as “Party Animal: Known for a wild gallop in the paddock” or “Horse Play: A real joker, prone to pranks on the track.”
  • Provide each participant with a few betting tokens or play money. Before each race, let them “bet” on their favorite horse. Award small prizes or bragging rights to those who pick the winning horse.

We did a similar activity, we used 'barbie' horses that I gathered from going to garage sales and car boot sales. All the horses were different colours, and we used string to pull them in from the start line:) The residents loved the game and were very competitive.

In our Day Centre in November,,our Melbourne Cup race day activity is made up with wooden horse shapes which have been attached to a stand up support ,.numbered up 20.You could use filled bottles that you can move..Wehave a large dice which each client/jockey takes in turn to throw. We set up a starting and finishing line, Depending on the number of Jockeys? it works out approx. 6 throws each.If you have a good caller to lighten up the occasion it makes it a very fun day..the first to the finish line is the winner and we have made the trophies or you an buy cheap Melbourne cup lookalikes small versions, at the Sams warehouse or such like shops.
