Drawing sunflowers is easy; if clients have difficulties, demonstrate or assist them with a few tips. The attached document shows an easy way of drawing sunflowers.

Materials:

  • Construction paper for sunflowers and leaves
  • Coloured pencils or acrylic paint, in different shades of yellow, orange, red, and other warm colours
  • Paint brushes
  • Craft Glue
  • Containers of water to clean brushes
  • Paper towels to dab excess paint
  • Large sheet of construction paper to mount the project

Instructions

  • Ask a group of clients to draw sunflowers; any size; from very large to small. Clients may need some inspiration; get hold of some pictures of sunflowers from magazines and old calendars (or the internet) and put on display for encouragement.
  • Paint sunflowers in different shades of yellow and orange.
  • Cut them out.
  • Assemble sunflowers on a poster.

Alternatively

  • Use sunflower templates provided and ask clients to colour them.
  • Assist them to cut them out.
  • Clients can then arrange and glue sunflowers and leaves onto construction paper above the ‘vase’ or otherwise create just a poster of the flowers.

We’d love to hear your feedback and see your photos!

This is a great activity for people of all abilities and we have done it with many day centre groups in past years.

One of our vision impaired clients was so happy she had been able to do this, that she framed hers and it looks great in her dining room.

Thank you for all your great activity ideas!

Loved the outcome of this project. I have residents at varying stages so it worked well do have a few color the leaves one color with markers, while the others beautifully colored their own flowers. Ours too will be framed as a wonderful keepsake!!

Thank you for sharing this wonderful idea. Our ladies really enjoyed making these beautiful happy sunflowers. Everyone was able to participate in this group activity and it was a wonderful activity that encouraged team work as the ladies all helped each other. We used crepe paper and kept to the orange yellow tones and it really looks effective. We used an old gift bag for the vase. It sits in a prominent spot near our bingo area and the ladies are loving showing of their new masterpiece.

Gorgeous Kim! Thanks for posting a photo!
